Unit Defending( Back 4.)
Description: Coach serves balls to red team, who look to score in any of the 4 goals, white team if they win ball play back to coach for a point. Encourage defending team to press ball in the first zone by offering them a double point - encourages press.
Focus on: Individual defending, engage ball carrier quickly, other 3 defenders slide across and offer cover and balance, if defender gets beat make sure nearest defender is in a position to press ball. Communication is vital, compactness of defending team, correct body shape whilst engaging ball carrier.
Progression: Red team rotate positions to try and unbalance the defending white team. Introduce 2 wide attacking players to the session on the outside of the grid.

2v2 +1 Wave Game.
Description: Coach serves ball to attacking team, who look to score in the opposite goal, attacking team can combine with their target player - who is on 2 touch to create a 3v2. Defending team, have same situation on transition. No double transitions.
Focus on: Engage ball carrier quickly, other defender provides cover and balance, defend the center of the pitch, communication between the 2 defenders is vital, recovery runs are a sprint, react to transition. win duel and the physical challenge, concentration levels - match runners off the ball, defend space and man.
Progression: Target player once played, can come in pitch to unbalance the defending team.

2v2/3v3/Defend the cross.
Description: 3 patterns described as above on the graphic, rotate the defenders and attacking players after 3 consecutive patterns, red team look to score in big goal, if defending team win ball play back to coach.
Focus on: 1) defend the box, man marking opponent, communication from GK is vital too, match runners off ball, win physical duel, strong in the tackle, stop opponent from turning and facing goal, quickly engage ball carrier, other defender provides cover and balance. 2) defend the winger, can you force wide away from goal, other defenders provide cover and balance, nearest player press ball carrier, recovery runs - sprint, defend the center of the pitch, correct body shape whist defending individually and as a unit. 3) make first contact on the cross ball, correct body shape - see both opponent and crosser, quick reactions to cross and 2nd balls, clear lines effectively - height and distance, match runners off ball, be first to the ball, win physical duel.
Progression: In situation 1, when coach is playing ball in, have a defender starting on the blue pole - to focus on recovery runs.
