Organization: 3x5 mins. 2 groups/pitches. 4 sequencies. 1) Red player dribbles and shoots into empty goal. 2) 2 white players then come out with ball to play a 2v1. 3) Red player leaves pitch and the other 3 reds come with ball out to play a 3v2. 4) the remaining 2 whites then come out with ball to play a 4v3.
Coaching Points and Details: Recognizing when to press ball and when to defend space (early decision) deflect the attack away from goal, delay the speed of attack to allow recovery, positioning and responsibilities of other defenders, regain possession - attack goal, recovery runs - to the center of the goal. DELAY. DENY. DEFLECT. DEFEND.
Main Activity
Defending when outnumbered Phase of Play.
Organization: 2x15 mins. Defending team (whites) defend big goal, upon winning the ball they look to find the blue target player or dribble over the yellow line, play then restarts from the target player.
Starting scenario: where midfielder of the defending team, attempts a square pass which gets intercepted by an attacking team defender, defending team wing back is positioned high and wide is then out of position, defending team midfielder is also out of position having made a forward run. Players need to be in a realistic position from the start point, start point also needs to be high enough up the field to leave space behind the for the attacking team to utilize when they counter.
Coaching points and Details: Early decision - press/drop/recover, recovery runs - where to, center of goal? deflect the attack away from goal, delay the speed of attack to allow recovery, decision when to engage the ball carrier, positioning and the responsibilities of defenders, regain possession - to attack! DENY, DELAY, DEFLECT, DEFEND!
Progression: Defending team must play through their striker before hitting target player or dribbling over line. Target player upon receiving ball can then come out and be another attacker to create an overload.
Small Sided Games
Defending when outnumbered squad practice.
Organization: 2x15 mins, offside line 25 yards from (blue markers)
Starting scenario: white defender comes out through the blue to create a 6v5 situation, no striker can come back, this also create a 2v3 scenario in the back line.
Coaching points and details: good concentration and communication, anticipate the transition, deny opportunities behind the defense, decision making of player - when to press, attackers try win ball back early, defenders delay progress and narrow off where they can in relation to the ball and opponents, midfield players track runners, force play away from goal, GK supports the defenders by communicating and positioning, compactness in defense to defend the goal, counter attack when possible.
